The Plug'n Play: February (‘20)
February 29, 2020
You can listen to the full playlist on Apple Music, Spotify, or Tidal
The close of February marks the end of Black History Month, and what a Black History Month it’s been. Primary season is in full swing in the United States (why are there so many debates and town halls?), the coronavirus dominated headlines (and continues to), and my beloved Sixers can’t seem to stay (or get) healthy, or win a road game. But alas, here we are. When all else is a mess, we can look to music as a site for reprieve. In particular, a range of Black artists have released music this month, taking up the mantle of questioning the social conditions in which we live, and dreaming of better futures.
Hear are some highlights from the month: Lianne Le Havas is back with new music; Thundercat released his second single for his upcoming album (and a very ridiculous/incredible music video to go along with it); Tame Impala’s much-anticipated 4th studio album; an absolute tour de force of an album from Ben Williams; the first installment in Moses Sumney’s double album, grae!
Songs 1-10, were selected by me, Stanley, and songs 11-22 were selected by Kevin. As always, we hope you find a song you like and check out the entire album! Below are some of our favorite songs from the month and a little about why we love them.
Stanley: Ben Williams — High Road (Featuring Mushinah)
I had a hard time picking one song from Ben Williams’ new album for the playlist. His new album, I AM A Man, is that good! But, after deliberating for a few days, High Road elevated itself as the choice. High Road doesn’t jump out of the speakers like other songs, it’s not the most musically complex piece of music, and there aren’t a ton of words. For the most part, the song is built around a 4 chord progression, and a drum beat that doesn’t change much. But, I think that’s the genius of the song - it’s simplicity is hypnotizing; it feels like meditation. Mushinah’s voice and stacked harmonies help carry the song, and Ben Williams’ bass keeps it all together.
Stanley: SZA and Justin Timberlake — The Other Side
Is this song good? Should I be ashamed that I like it? Is Justin Timberlake back from the woods? Am I going to be in a theater on opening night to watch Trolls World Tour? Have you seen the tracklist for the Trolls World Tour soundtrack? I don’t have answers to any of these questions. We’ll check in later.
Stanley: Lianne Le Havas — Bittersweet
After a 5-year hiatus, Lianne Le Havas is back with new music! Bittersweet shows Lianne Le Havas in her element, her voice is as soulful as ever, the songwriting is incredible, and the composition of the music feels great. Can’t wait to hear her new album when it comes out!
